One of my absolute favorite places in all of South Florida is the neighborhood of Wynwood Miami. It’s the global epicenter of street art and contains some of the most stunning art and graffiti ever produced. I always take my friends and family to see Wynwood when they come to visit Miami. For the past few years, it’s been one of the top things to do in Miami whether you live here or are just visiting. The art is absolutely astonishing, the events are fun, and the whole scene in Wynwood is constantly changing, developing, and improving. And now, after years of transformation, Wynwood Miami has been officially named one of America’s Greatest Places by the American Planning Association!

The American Planning Association is a non-profit educational organization that provides leadership in the development of vital communities around the country. Every year, the American Planning Association announces their list of 15 ‘Great Places in America’, which is composed of ‘Great Neighborhoods’, ‘Great Streets’, and ‘Great Public Spaces’. For 2015 the APA chose 4 Great Neighborhoods, 5 Great Streets, and 6 Great Public Spaces. Our beloved Wynwood Miami neighborhood was selected as one of the 4 best neighborhoods in the United States. The APA chooses special places in the United States that demonstrate “exceptional planning, exceptional character, and exceptional quality. Great Places are selected once per year and represent the gold standard in terms of having community involvement, a true sense of place, a vision for the future, and strong historical and cultural interest.”

I’m a huge fan of street art and graffiti.  When I travel, a good portion of my travel photos end up being shots of graffiti.  In my homes, the majority of my artwork is graffiti, whether it’s a photo of someone’s street art, or a graffiti painting; I tend to collect art that leans heavily towards graffiti.  I collect amazing books about street art, I pick interior furnishings that resemble street art (see last two photos below), and I know that graffiti can make an amazing focal point in any modern interior. If you want to try to incorporate graffiti in interior design, there are so many ways you can do it! Options range from taking photos of your favorite street art and framing them, buying paintings from some of your favorite graffiti artists, having a street artists come to your home and paint directly on your walls or furniture, or even buying graffiti products such as the ‘Peronda Banksy’ graffiti tiles pictured below (used in this amazing passive house in New Zealand).

For those of us that live here in Miami we are spoiled because we have one of the World’s highest concentrations of street art in our Wynwood Miami neighborhood; and are lucky enough to have had most of the World’s best artists leave their mark on this incredible part of town.  I visit Wynwood on a monthly basis to wander around and photograph the newest art and to get creative inspiration.  I maintain a photo album of the street art in Wynwood; if you’re a fan of street art, you’ll love those photos!  Wynwood even has its first street art based condo development called ‘250 Wynwood’ opening soon, where graffiti features prominently in the design (see photo below).
